Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Hibiscus that is native to Africa, most likely West Africa. In the 16th and early 17th centuries it was spread to Asia and the West Indies, where it has since become naturalized in many places. It is known for its vibrant calyces and tangy citrus flavor. Red roselle is an annual or perennial plant. Its height is 5 to 8 feet tall and can spread 2 to 5 feet wide. The flowers are large and a hibiscus shape. They start blooming mid summer to early fall depending on the climate and growing conditions of the plant.
Hardiness, it can be grown as perennial in USAD hardiness zone 8 through 11 in colder climates. It is usually grown as an annual or in a container that can be moved indoors.
It is used for tradional recipes like making tea, jam, sauces, salad and other juices. The plants are also used for cooking in African and Carribean cutures for its health benefits. I mainly use Hibiscus flowers for making tea or cold drinks. Growing up back home, I have seen it added on cultural dishes, delicious. Leaves taste good on fish soup too.
